THE CASE-A-THON BRIEF

Problem statement

Data-Driven Follow-Up Assurance for Rural Teleconsultations

Teleconsultation is an important link between rural patients and doctors in Telangana. At Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, a Community Health Officer connects patients with hypertension and diabetes to district hospital doctors through eSanjeevani.

However, the consultation is only the first step in the patient's care journey. Patients may need to collect medicines, complete diagnostic tests, and return for follow-up consultations within the following weeks. A significant number of patients may not complete these steps, while the system may still record the initial consultation as “completed”, providing limited visibility into what happens afterwards.

Relevant follow-up information is distributed across multiple sources, including:

  • Teleconsultation records
  • NCD screening records
  • Medicine dispensing registers
  • Visit records
  • ASHA diaries
  • Patient demographic and geographic information

These records are not systematically linked, making it difficult to identify patients who have been lost to follow-up.

Your challenge

Design a data-driven follow-up assurance solution that can combine these fragmented records to:

  • Identify patients who are lost to follow-up.
  • Predict which patients may be at risk of dropping out of care.
  • Help health workers prioritize and intervene with patients who need follow-up.
  • Demonstrate how data and AI/analytics can help rural health systems move from simply counting consultations to ensuring completed care.

Your solution should account for the practical realities of rural healthcare delivery, including low-end phones, intermittent connectivity, limited health-worker time, privacy, and consent requirements.

Teams should address

  1. How can fragmented teleconsultation, NCD, dispensing, and visit records be linked to determine a patient's follow-up status?
  2. What stages and factors contribute to patients becoming “lost to follow-up”, and how can these patients be identified?
  3. What data-driven intervention should be implemented to improve follow-up, and how would its effectiveness, feasibility, and cost be measured?

Dataset

A synthetic dataset representing the fragmented healthcare records described in the case will be provided to participating teams as part of the competition materials. It represents multiple stages of the patient care journey.

Teams are expected to use the provided dataset for data-driven analysis and support their proposed solution with relevant findings and evidence.

Constraints & considerations

  • Privacy-preserving data handling
  • ABDM-compliant approaches
  • Patient consent and responsible use of healthcare data
  • Low-end mobile devices
  • Intermittent internet connectivity
  • Limited health-worker time and resources
  • Practical feasibility in rural healthcare settings
  • Effectiveness, feasibility, and cost of the proposed intervention

Eligibility, format & timeline

Who can participate

Case-a-thon is organised by the PM Club, IIIT Hyderabad, as part of Infinium 2026. It is open to currently enrolled college and university students across India, in teams of 3–4. Inter-college, inter-specialization and inter-branch teams are allowed. Each participant may be part of only one team.

Round 1 — PPT submission · Online

Eligible teams have a 7-day window to analyse the case and submit a PPT solution through the designated platform. Use the synthetic dataset to support your findings. The top 50 teams qualify for Round 2.

Round 2 — Online presentation

The 50 shortlisted teams present their approach, analysis and recommendations to a judging panel over 2 days. Teams must be available for their assigned slot and answer questions about their assumptions, methodology and proposed solution. The top 10 teams qualify for the final.

Round 3 — Final presentation · Offline

The 10 finalist teams present in the Himalaya classroom at IIIT Hyderabad on 4 October 2026, 10:00 AM–12:00 PM IST, followed by a live Q&A. Final results follow the evaluation criteria communicated to shortlisted teams.

Submission requirements & evaluation

Round 1 submission

  • A PPT presentation addressing the problem statement.
  • Relevant analysis and insights derived from the provided dataset.
  • A clearly defined and feasible proposed solution.
  • Supporting evidence for the team's recommendations.

Submit within the specified 7-day submission window. Further specifications, including slide or file-size limits, will be communicated through the designated submission platform.

Evaluation criteria

  • Understanding of the problem statement
  • Quality and relevance of analysis — depth, rigor, and relevance of the analysis supporting the proposed solution
  • Identification of factors contributing to loss to follow-up
  • Quality and feasibility of the proposed solution
  • Appropriate use of data and AI/analytics
  • Consideration of rural healthcare constraints
  • Privacy-preserving and ABDM-compliant approach
  • Assessment of effectiveness, feasibility, and cost
  • Clarity and quality of presentation
  • Ability to justify the proposed solution during presentation and Q&A
